Program

Research is an essential component of dentistry in the 21st century in the form of epidemiological research, research in the field of bio-materials, or clinical research. The Medical Health student, post-graduate or general practitioner needs to be prepared to understand and apply; if not actually conduct research.

The scope of health research is vast and involves a lifetime of learning. Successful research requires a good idea, and the resources and method to carry out that idea. While the basic principles of research remain the same, the tools and methodology of research have become increasingly digitalized. It is therefore important for the modern researcher to be familiar with modern research software.

Although traditionally statistical analysis has been the task of the biostatistician, it is essential for the researcher to have a sound understanding of statistical methods and familiarity with statistical software packages.

The objectives of this course are as follows

  1. Introduce the participant to the fundamental concepts of research
  2. Enable the participant to distinguish between the different sources of information available and critically evaluate a paper, a source of literature and assess the different journals that publish medical literature
  3. Familiarize the participants with scientific research writing
  4. Train the participant in the techniques of finding literature online and using digital sources of information in their research and train the participant in online reference management using EndNote™ Reference Management Software
  5. Introduce the basic concepts of biostatistics and train the participant in the storage, use and fundamental analysis of data using SPSS™ data processing software
  6. Emphasize the ethical considerations in conducting scientific research.
